Dr. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University, announced that the university has continued its progress in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, one of the most prominent international rankings for environmentally sustainable universities. Benha University was ranked among the top 300 universities worldwide, securing 253rd place out of 2,016 universities representing 105 countries, advancing by ten positions compared to the previous edition. At both the national and African levels, the university was ranked among the top five universities, achieving fourth place among Egyptian and African universities in this year’s ranking.

Dr. El-Gizawy noted that the UI GreenMetric Ranking is one of the leading international classifications that assesses universities' commitment to developing environmentally friendly infrastructure and evaluates institutions based on their sustainable development practices and adherence to environmental sustainability standards.

Meanwhile, Dr. Gehan Abdel Hady, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, stated that the university maintained its distinguished national standing, ranking first among Egyptian and African universities in the Energy and Climate Change criterion, and second locally in Waste Management. The university was also ranked among the top five Egyptian universities in both the Water and Transportation criteria.

She further explained that the 2026 UI GreenMetric Ranking evaluates university performance in sustainable development through seven main criteria, including one newly added criterion compared to the previous edition. These criteria are:

• Infrastructure and Smart Buildings
• Energy and Climate Change
• Waste Management
• Water
• Transportation
• Education and Research
• Governance and Digitalization

It is worth noting that this year’s ranking witnessed an increase of 271 participating universities worldwide, while the number of Egyptian universities included in the ranking reached 46 public, national, and private universities, representing an increase of eight universities compared to the previous edition.
